ADERI showcases cutting-edge technologies to strengthen SANDF
The Defence and Security cluster recently hosted an impactful ‘show-and-tell’ event, unveiling the remarkable capabilities of the Aeronautical Defence Evaluation and Research Institute (ADERI) to the South African Air Force (SAAF) and key industry partners. The event, held on Friday, 25 October 2024, at the CSIR’s Medium Speed Wind Tunnel in Pretoria, offered a unique glimpse into the strategic technologies being developed to keep the SANDF at the forefront of defence innovation.
The ADERI, hosted under the Defence and Security Aerospace Systems impact area, serves as a critical arm of the SAAF. It provides technological and engineering expertise, crucial infrastructure, and cutting-edge research facilities, all aimed at addressing pressing challenges in the defence sector. By leveraging this expertise, the ADERI not only maintains the readiness of the SAAF but also gives the SANDF a significant technological edge.
During the event, Sipho Mbhokota, CSIR Defence and Security Executive Cluster Manager, emphasised the critical role of ADERI. He described it as a vital investment by the Department of Defence, ensuring that the SANDF is equipped to face modern threats using advanced science and technology. Acting Chief Director Materiél Governance at the Department of Defence, Peter Lebelo, reinforced this message in his keynote address. He highlighted that ADERI is more than just a technological hub; it represents a strategic capability for the SANDF. Lebelo lauded the CSIR’s role in solidifying South Africa’s position as a leader in aerospace innovation, attributing this success to the ADERI’s relentless focus on advancing defence technologies.
Biko Managa, CSIR Impact Area Manager for Aerospace Systems, further highlighted that investments in ADERI will ensure that the SANDF remains adaptable and capable of addressing emerging challenges. It will allow for the development of advanced aerospace and defence technologies that enhance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, and strengthen operational readiness in the space and air domains. These investments will lead to increased self-reliance in critical areas such as space technologies, unmanned aerial systems, and store/weapon integration capabilities, securing the SANDF’s role as a key player in the continental and global aerospace and defence arenas.
The show and tell attracted industry partners and key stakeholders, all eager to see the CSIR’s latest advancements. Brigadier General Andre Barends, Director of Technology Development under the Defence Matériel Division, expressed his admiration for the event. “It is both an honour and privilege to be part of such a well-organised and impactful exhibition,” he stated, declaring the event a resounding success.
The exhibition showcased a wide array of ADERI’s pioneering capabilities, including aerospace system design and development, aerodynamic simulation and testing, gas turbine technology, aircraft flutter prediction and testing, modelling and simulation, and stores integration. These technological breakthroughs reflect the CSIR’s commitment to innovation and strategic foresight. In his speech, Lebelo’s words resonated strongly: “As we look into the future, we must ensure that our innovations support a sustainable and adaptable Defence Force.”
The success of this show-and-tell event is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the SANDF, the CSIR, and their industry partners. It underscores the importance of ongoing innovation in securing South Africa’s defence capabilities and highlights the strategic value of harnessing science and technology for national security. As the SANDF continues its journey towards enhanced operational readiness and strategic superiority, the ADERI remains a cornerstone of this mission, proving that partnerships and technological advancement are key to a safer and more secure future.
